Safety Considerations When Choosing a School

There are many considerations to be made when choosing a flight school that will prepare for your career in aviation. The following provides some points of interest you should explore in making your decision about which flight school will provide not only the best, but the safest training available. Do the training aircraft have?
  • Glass Cockpit Technology: This technology simplifies aircraft operation and navigation to allow pilots to focus only on the most pertinent information.
  • ADS-B: (automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast) this system allows pilots to "see" other aircraft as well as terrain features that may minimize the possibility of midair collisions and CFIT (controlled Flight into Terrain).
  • Pulsing Aircraft Lights: Pulsing aircraft lights provide increased aircraft visibility during night flights and during reduced visibility weather conditions. Pulsing lights also provide increase reaction times for avian wildlife resulting in a potential decrease in bird strike incidents.
  • Overhead windows: These are sometimes referred to as skylights, which are important for collision avoidance.
  • Airbags: Specially designed for aircraft these airbags are integrated in to the seat belt restraints. These airbags deploy outward in the event of a sudden impact.

Learning to fly can be a fun and rewarding experience. While there is risk associated with any mode of transportation, the likelihood of being involved in a flight training accident is extremely low. Regardless, accidents can happen. Determining the safety features on a schools aircraft fleet will tell you a lot about its philosophy relative to aviation safety. You can be assured if you chose a school with a modern, up-to-date fleet of training aircraft you’ll be receiving the highest standard of aviation education.
